Third Round of Political Consultations between Pakistan and Italy

(2017-10-20) Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua led Pakistan's delegation to the Third Round of Bilateral Political Consultations with Italy in Rome today. The Italian delegation was led by Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy.

The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. They expressed satisfaction at increased level of cooperation between Pakistan and Italy in all fields. Progress made under various strands of the Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP), which represents a long-term commitment to work together to further strengthen this partnership, was appreciated.

Both delegations were satisfied at the deepening of ties. They reiterated the desire to further intensify political, defence, economic and cultural linkages, including increase in trade, investment and people-to-people contacts.

Pakistan and Italy termed terrorism as a major threat, which needs to be eradicated through greater international cooperation. Satisfaction was expressed at their continued cooperation at the UN and other multilateral forums. Views were exchanged on regional and international issues of importance, including Afghanistan, Pakistan-India relations including Kashmir, NSG, Mediterranean, migration and the EU.

The talks were held in a friendly atmosphere. The Foreign Secretary invited her counterpart to visit Pakistan for the next round of political consultations in Islamabad next year.
