Visit of Minister to NATO Defence College, Rome

(2017-10-26) The Minister of Defence, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan visited the NATO Defence College and addressed course participants on Pakistan's role in regional stability.

2. Upon arrival, the Minister was received by the Dean of the NATO Defence College and was introduced to senior members of the faculty. He also met the three Pakistani participants of the senior NATO Defence course.

3. In his talk, the Minister spoke about regional disputes, political instabilities, social economic regression, transnational terrorism and the inadequacies of the international system to handle the various crises facing the world today. He highlighted the geographic importance of South Asia and spoke about the strategic and economic potential of the region.

4. The Minister stressed that for peace and stability in South Asia, it was imperative to have good relations between Pakistan and India and find a solution to the complex situation in Afghanistan. He stressed that without the settlement of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, there could be no lasting peace in the region.

5. On Afghanistan, he stated that the instability in the country affects the region and directly impacts on its economic progress and prosperity. He elaborated on measures taken by Pakistan to eradicate terrorism and highlighted the key components of the National Action Plan. He stressed that more needs to be done by the international community to fight the menace of terrorism.

6. The Minister held interactive discussions with the course participants on Afghanistan, CPEC, Middle-East and regional connectivity.

7. The Minister received a standing ovation for his candid talk.
