(2017-06-08) The 6th Round of Pakistan-Japan Bilateral Consultations on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was held in Islamabad on 08 June 2017 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Japanese delegation was headed by Ambassador Kazutoshi Aikawa, Director General, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Pakistan side was led by Mr. Khalil Hashmi, Director General, Arms Control and Disarmament Division.

Both sides held a detailed exchange of views on the entire range of disarmament and non-proliferation issues, covering the state of play at the multilateral disarmament fora, emerging trends in the global disarmament discourse and on the threats posed to security and strategic stability in their respective regions as well as at the global level.

The Pakistan side conveyed a keen interest in further expanding bilateral cooperation with Japan in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. DG Hashmi also made a strong case for Japan’s support to Pakistan’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group based on its impressive credentials as a country possessing expertise in advanced nuclear technologies and its solid commitment to non-proliferation objectives.
