Bilateral Political Consultations between Pakistan and Latvia were held today (6 December 2016) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Zaheer A. Janjua, Additional Secretary (Europe), led the Pakistan side while the Latvian delegation was headed by Mr. Andrejs Pildegovics, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two sides, while undertaking a comprehensive review of bilateral ties and interaction at international fora, agreed to enhance their bilateral cooperation and collaboration at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms. Both sides also had a detailed exchange of views on regional and international issues of importance.
The State Secretary also called on Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs. The Adviser underscored the need for further strengthening the economic and trade relations as well as active collaboration in the educational and technical fields. The Adviser also briefed the Latvian delegation on the role being played by Pakistan in managing the Afghan refugees and their dignified repatriation.
The State Secretary visited the Pakistan’s Centre of Excellence on Nuclear Security, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Nuclear Medicine Oncology & Radiotherapy Institute, apart from a meeting with Chairman of the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad.
Pakistan and Latvia cooperate closely on bilateral and multilateral issues. The Annual Bilateral Political Consultations provides a useful platform to review progress throughout the entire spectrum of relations, identify opportunities for future areas of cooperation. The last session of these consultations was held in Riga, Latvia on 24 November 2014.
