According to the Agreement on Consular Access signed between Pakistan and India on 21st May, 2008, both countries are required to exchange lists of prisoners in each other’s custody twice a year, on 1st January and 1st July, respectively.
Consistent with the provisions of this Agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over a list of 281 Indian prisoners (49 civilian and 232 fishermen) in Pakistan to the High Commission of India in Islamabad today.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also handed over the list of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. According to this list, there are a total of 396 Pakistanis in Indian jails (257 civilian and 139 fishermen).
