The First Pakistan-EU Local Human Rights Dialogue was held today at Islamabad under the framework of Pakistan-EU Joint Commission.
Pakistan side was led by Additional Secretary (Europe) Mr. Nadeem Riyaz while the EU delegation was led by Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Bertil Wigemark, Head of the EU Delegation to Pakistan.
Both sides discussed the issues of GSP Plus Status and implementation of its related 27 Conventions, human rights, death penalty, gender equality and labour standards.
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to implementation of the ratified conventions in the context of GSP Plus. While appreciating the positive developments in Pakistan in the context of human rights, the EU Delegation expressed its concerns on death penalty, women and minorities rights.
Pakistani raised the issue of misuse of freedom of speech. Both sides agreed to work together for promotion of inter-faith harmony.
The EU offered its cooperation and assistance in various areas of socio-economic development.
The talks were held in a frank, cordial and constructive atmosphere.
