Foreign Minister Qureshi receives Mr. Eamon Gilmore, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights
Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi received Mr. Eamon Gilmore, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.
Foreign Minister Qureshi welcomed the Special Representative to Pakistan and expressed satisfaction on the upward trajectory of Pakistan-EU relations. He noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides.
Foreign Minister Qureshi highlighted the positive synergy between Pakistan’s socio-economic agenda and the GSP Plus scheme for, inter alia, creating employment opportunities and women empowerment. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to full implementation of the 27 GSP Plus related conventions and hoped for the continuation of GSP Plus status post 2023.
The Foreign Minister apprised the delegation about the steps taken by Pakistan for protection and promotion of human rights. He also invited European Union’s attention to the ongoing gross human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK) and stressed that the international community in general and EU in particular must play its part for resolution of this long-standing dispute.
Special Representative Mr. Gilmore briefed Foreign Minister about the European Union efforts towards promotion of human rights. He stated that bilaterally EU and Pakistan were making steady progress.
