Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on 25 May, 2015. The Secretary General was accompanied by his Senior Advisor Ambassador Mokhtar Omar and Syed ShibliFaraz, Senator-in-Waiting.
During the meeting matters pertaining to Inter-Parliamentary Union, particularly the role of parliaments in helping achieve Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) came up for discussion. The Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sartaj Aziz, stressed the importance of SDGs for Pakistan, owing to Pakistan’s active engagement in the process. He noted that IPU has an important role to play in implementation of Post-2015 SDGs.
The IPU Secretary General highlighted the need to create awareness among the Parliamentariansand focus on their capacity-building, in order for them to effectively contribute towards achievement of SDGs. The IPU Secretary General expressed his appreciation for Pakistan Parliament’s active role in the IPU and its regular participation in the IPU Assemblies and related meetings.
