PAKISTAN High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, Brigadier (Rtd) Muhammad Zareef Malik, led the celebrations for the 76th anniversary of Pakistan Day, which were held yesterday at the Pakistan High Commission in Kampong Lambak Kanan.
Brigadier (Rtd) Muhammad Zareef Malik raised the national flag of Pakistan, while Pakistani nationals attending the event paid respect to their country’s national anthem.
The high commissioner also read out messages from Mr Mamnoon Hussain, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan; and Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
In his message, Mamnoon Hussain voiced his country’s resolve to fight “the menace of terrorism and extremism”.
He also gave assurance for the protection of minorities living in Pakistan, and the empowerment of Pakistani women.
Pakistan Day is a public holiday in Pakistan, to commemorate the Lahore Resolution of March 23, 1940.
The Lahore Resolution is considered a major milestone in the All-India Muslim League’s struggle for an independent, Muslim-majority state.
It paved the way for the Constitution of 1956, making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic republic.
