According to the data released by China’s Customs authorities, Pakistan’s exports to Pakistan Mission Chengdu’s jurisdiction have witnessed a quantum jump of 132% year-on-year basis. In 2018, Pakistan exports to this region rose about 18.75 million US $ while in 2017 in the corresponding period (January-December) exports were about 8 million dollars. It may be noted that in 2016 exports stood at 8.9 million dollars.

The jurisdiction of Pakistan Mission Chengdu, based in southwest of China, includes rapidly-developing provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and the municipality of Chongqing. The region is larger than Pakistan and boasts an economy of 1.4 trillion US dollars.

Major exports from Pakistan to southwest of China in 2018 included chromium, cotton yarn, rice, raw leather, animal products ( bone grains), and frozen seafood.

Apart from overall massive export jump, Pakistan’s traders also witnessed highest amount of spot-selling in 2018 in the annual Kunming Trade Fair which was to the tune of nearly 8, 00,000 US dollars. In 2017, the sale in Kunming stood at 5, 58,000 US dollars. This meant Pakistan witnessed 43% rise in spot-selling in 2018. Owing to technical reasons however, the sale in Kunming is not reflected in annual trade data.

Pakistan’s Consul General to Chengdu, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, maintained that the Mission had single-mindedly pursued the goal of enhancing Pakistan’s exports to this vibrant region and had expanded its outreach efforts to major trade bodies, investment houses, chambers and key stakeholders to introduce Pakistan’s products.

“We participated in major trade exhibitions and fairs and introduced rising potential of Pakistan in the region. A welcome development is that CCPIT Sichuan (China Council for the Promotion of International Trade) will soon be opening its office in Islamabad. A senior trade delegation from Sichuan left for Pakistan yesterday. Number of trade visits between Pakistan and this region are gradually moving up showing confidence in Pakistan’s economy. All such steps have contributed to project the brand of Pakistan in a decisive manner prompting Chinese traders and investors to see Pakistan as growing market with whom business needed to be expanded,’ Mudassir Tipu added.
