PM Muhammad Nawaz Sharif met with Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon on 25th September, 2014. Welcoming the Prime Minister, the Secretary General fondly recalled his visit to Islamabad in August last year and his participation in the Independence Day celebrations of Pakistan. The Secretary General told that he was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Government of Pakistan.
The Secretary General expressed his concern over the loss of lives and devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan. The Prime Minister briefed the Secretary General on the efforts undertaken by his Government to provide relief to the flood victims in the affected areas in Punjab and throughout the country.
The Prime Minister apprised the Secretary General of his government’s current efforts to flush out terrorists and dismantle their networks. The ongoing military operation against terrorists had disrupted their command and control system. The Government had zero tolerance for terrorism and was determined to root out terrorist forces once and for all.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Kashmir was one of the long standing conflicts on the agenda of the UN Security Council and asked the Secretary General to take steps for its peaceful settlement in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The Prime Minister told that his Government had sincerely embarked on negotiation process with India for peaceful resolution of all disputes. He expressed dismay over the cancellation of the Foreign Secretary-level talks by India which was a setback to the dialogue process. He hoped that the Indian leadership would resume the dialogue process without any delay in the interest of peace and prosperity in the region.
The two leaders welcomed the completion of electoral process in Afghanistan and the agreement over the appointment of the new President and Chief Executive. The Prime Minister expressed his readiness to work with the new Government in Afghanistan for peace and development in the region.
