The United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan (SRSG), Tadamichi Yamamoto, called on Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi. He briefed the Foreign Minister on the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) mandate and its current activities in Afghanistan.
The Foreign Minister underlined Pakistan’s close cooperation with the United Nations and the important role of UNAMA.
The Foreign Minister informed that Pakistan’s vision of economic prosperity and connectivity could not be realized without a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process.
Referring to the “International Conference on 40 years of Afghan refugee presence in Pakistan”, held in Islamabad on 17-18 February 2020, the Foreign Minister reiterated the commitment for safe and dignified repatriation of Afghan refugees to their homeland and expressed the hope that the international community would play its part by supporting the establishment of peace and creation of “pull factors” inside Afghanistan.
SRSG Yamamoto lauded Pakistan for hosting millions of Afghan refugees for over 40 years and for convening the Conference which would contribute to redrawing attention of the international community towards this important issue.
