Mr. Nicholas Haysom, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan called on Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs, today. They exchanged views on positive direction of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and evolving regional situation.
The Adviser reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to take forward the process of constructive engagement with Afghanistan. He said that the recent visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Kabul had further strengthened the momentum of improvement of Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral relations. He told Mr. Haysom that the visit offered an opportunity to renew mutual resolve to deepen cooperation on a broad range of issues of mutual interest, including peace and stability, counter-terrorism, border-security, trade and economic cooperation, and regional cooperation.
He highlighted Pakistan’s efforts for peace and development in Afghanistan at bilateral, regional and international level, including through unstinting support for an Afghan-led and Afghan owned reconciliation process.
Mr. Haysom stated that visit of the Prime Minister to Afghanistan would help the two countries to work together to promote the shared objectives of peace, stability and economic development in the region. He recognized the need for deeper regional cooperation for peace and development in Afghanistan and commended Pakistan’s constructive role in this regard.
