An elegant Flag Hoisting Ceremony was held at the Embassy today on the occasion of Pakistan's Independence Day.
The event began with the recitation from the Holy Quran. The national flag was hoisted by Ambassador Nadeem Riyaz. The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Tanveer Ahmed and Second Secretary, Mr. Salman Pervaiz read the messages of the President and the Prime Minister for the audience.
The Ambassador, in his address paid rich tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives in winning independence. He highlighted the progress Pakistan has made since independence and spoke about the challenges the country faces for which concerted efforts must continue to realize the vision of its founding fathers.
Ambassador Riyaz spoke at length about the situation in Indian occupied Kashmir. He elaborated on Indian decision to unilaterally repeal Article 370. He drew the attention of the audience to the gross violation of Human Rights in IoK. He said that Kashmir is a disputed territory and the longest unfinished agenda item of the UNSC.
He called upon the International community to play its due role in solving the over 70 years dispute in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. Pakistan always has and would continue to provide, political, moral and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir. The Ambassador said that Pakistan is a country that desires peace with all its neighbours. It wants economic development in the region.
He advised the Pakistani community to play their role in making the Italian people aware of the plight of the Kashmiri brethren. He said that a number of protests and rallies were being organized by the community in Brescia, Cremona, Milan, Bologna and Rome. The community should participate in these to show solidarity with the people of Kashmir. He was categorical that all Italian laws should be followed in these protests events.
The ceremony also included singing of national songs and special prayers were offered for the peace, progress and prosperity of the homeland. The Embassy was specially decorated with Pakistani flags for the occasion and guests were served traditional Pakistani breakfast.
The ceremony was attended by a large number of community members and officials of the Embassy along with their families.
