Professor Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, Belgian Candidate for Election to the Position of IPCC Chair calls on the SAPM
Professor Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, the Belgian candidate for the position of Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), called on Syed Tariq Fatemi, special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs (SAPM), this afternoon. Professor Ypersele was accompanied by the Belgian Ambassador to Pakistan.
The two sides had a brief exchange of views on the impacts of climate change on socioeconomic growth, particularly in developing countries, and the ongoing international cooperation to deal with it. SAPM noted that despite being a low emitter of green-house-gases, Pakistan was among the most vulnerable countries to the negative effects of climate change.
SAPM stressed the need for the global community to strengthen its ongoing partnership to effectively address the phenomenon of climate change, in keeping with the principles of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC).
The IPCC is a Geneva-based scientific forum to enhance global understanding on climate change. Election for the position of chair of this body is scheduled to be held in Croatia in October, 2015. Pakistan is a member of this body.
