Mr. Abdul Hameed has been appointed as Ambassador of Pakistan to Japan and he joined the Embassy of Pakistan, Tokyo on 30 June 2025.
He has been dealing with counter-terrorism related issues as Additional Foreign Secretary and Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad from January 2023 to June 2025. During this period, he represented Pakistan as a member in the Council of Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure of SCO. Earlier, he served as Consul General of Pakistan in Toronto from 2020 to 2022.
Mr. Hameed worked in Pakistan High Commission, New Delhi as Minister- Counsellor from 2016 to 2019. He served as Counsellor (Political) in the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations, New York from 2009 to 2014. During these five years, he represented Pakistan in the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly and participated in debates and negotiations on the resolutions relating to counter-terrorism, rule of law, Law of the Sea, responsibility of states, criminal accountability, universal jurisdiction, protection of persons in disasters and reports of the International Law Commission. He also represented his country in various committees of the Security Council during Pakistan’s tenure as a non-permanent member of the Council in 2012-13. Previously, he served in Pakistan Embassy Moscow from 2000-2003.
During the last 29 years of his diplomatic career, he worked in various capacities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad. As Director (UN), he covered, among other issues, Pakistan’s participation in the United Nations’ peacekeeping operations. As Director (Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs), he was dealing with human rights related issues including the submission of periodical reports to various treaty bodies. At the headquarters, he worked as Director (China, Japan and Koreas), Deputy Director (Foreign Secretary office), and Deputy Director (Americas).
He was Research Associate at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD), Georgetown University, Washington in 2005-06. He was also the United Nations Disarmament Fellow in 2000.
Born in 1970, Mr. Hameed obtained his Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the United States of America, in 2006-08.
He speaks Russian, English, Urdu, and Punjabi. He is married and has three children.
