The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 9 June 1992. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Azerbaijan was opened on 12 March 1993. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan was opened on 24 August 1997. The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan is Qasim Mohiuddin.
Over 77 Agreements and MoUs have been signed with Azerbaijan, including the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) framework and Bilateral Political Consultations. Protocol on Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Pakistan was signed on January 1995 in Baku.
Four Rounds of Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) have taken place between the two sides. The 4th Round was held at the Foreign Secretary/Deputy Foreign Minister level in Islamabad on 23 January 2025. The 8th Round of JMC / IGC at the level of Minister of Defence Production and Minister of Defence Industry was held in Islamabad in 24 January 2025. It was co-Chaired by the Minister of Defence Production from Pakistan and the Minister for Defence Industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Protocol signed during the JMC agreed on an ambitious roadmap to take the relationship to the next level.
