The diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Czech Republic (the erstwhile Czechoslovakia) were established on 27 September 1950. Relations continued with the establishment of Czech Republic on 1 January 1993.
Czech scientists and travelers have been visiting what is now Pakistan since the middle of 19th Century. The cultural exchanges and mutual inspiration intensified especially in the 1920s and 1930s. Professor Vincenc Lesny, a Czech indologist and one of the most prominent figures in the Czech orientalism, held several lectures at the Punjab University Lahore in 1922. Eleven years later, the work of famous Czech drama writer Karel Capek, who introduced the word robot into foreign languages, was translated into Urdu.
Initial Czechoslovakian investment traces back to 1938 when the Bat’a Shoe Company laid the groundwork by establishing the Bata Factory in Lahore, forming the Batapur village around it. The Czech Republic supplied power turbines for the Mangla Dam. Additionally, Czech companies were involved in constructing the new independent power producers (IPPs) in Balloki (Orient Power) and Mureedke (Sapphire Electric).
Historically, the leadership of the two countries has been interacting bilaterally, as well as on the sidelines of multilaterals foras, reaffirming their commitment to further enhance the existing scope of relationship.
Pakistan and the Czech Republic have a robust economic cooperation. Pakistan’s exports include traditional items such as textiles, rice, leather, cutlery, and surgical & sports goods. On the other hand Czech exports primarily include sophisticated machinery and equipment. Some increase has been observed in exports of these commodities during past few years. Increase in exports from Pakistan to Czech Republic could be largely attributed to GSP Plus status due to which Pakistan’s major exports have duty free access to the EU markets.
Since 2006, nine rounds of Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) have been held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and the Czech Republic. The 9th round of BPC was held in Islamabad on May 02, 2023. The tenth session of the Bilateral Consultations would now be held in Prague, at a mutually agreed date.
