The Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Ambassador Kamran Akhtar, delivered Pakistan’s national statement at the extraordinary session of the IAEA’s Board of Governors, held on 16 June 2025, to consider Israel’s blatant attacks on the peaceful nuclear facilities of Iran.
The Permanent Representative, during the statement, highlighted the following:
The Middle East is experiencing renewed devastation and destruction.
Israel's unprovoked attacks on IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities in Iran triggered the current hostilities.
Attacks by Israel occurred during ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
These actions were intended to erode trust and the sanctity of the negotiation process.
Pakistan consistently advocates for dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward.
Pakistan stresses the imperative of finding a solution through peaceful means.
Pakistan takes note of the willingness expressed by the US to keep negotiations open; and encourages Iran to choose diplomacy and dialogue.
The international community must not allow any state to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner, undermining IAEA and UN mechanisms.
Established international mechanisms for addressing the Iranian nuclear issue should not be upended, as it would harm the international order.
Impunity or tolerance for illegal use of force sets a dangerous precedent for the global community.
IAEA’s verification role should be supported and not disrupted.
Pakistan, like most member states, supports durable peace and stability in the region.
Attacks on nuclear facilities for peaceful purposes violate international law, the UN Charter, IAEA Statute, and relevant General Conference resolutions.
It is the IAEA’s responsibility to clarify its legal position on such attacks and report to the Board and UNSC on their legal, safeguards, safety, and security implications.
