Pakistan’s Space Policy
In 2023, the Government of Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the space sector by approving the National Space Policy and Space Activities Rules. These legislative frameworks are designed to create a conducive environment for the advancement of space technologies, emphasizing public-private partnerships, space education, and international cooperation. The policy prioritizes infrastructure investment, professional training, and the commercialization of space products, aiming to stimulate economic growth and address global challenges through collaborative efforts.
The primary focus areas of the Space Policy include:
i) Establishing a robust regulatory framework to govern space activities and the space sector in Pakistan.
ii) Leveraging space-based data, information and services to drive economic growth, enhance national security, and address societal challenges.
iii) Investing in the development of space infrastructure, facilities and a skilled workforce to support space missions and operations.
iv) Encouraging innovations, R&D in space-related sciences, techs, and applications.
v) Policy emphasizes the development of the local space industry and the commercialization of space products and services. This strategic direction creates opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation within the country.
vi) The policy encourages Public private partnership in space sector, fostering collaboration between government agencies, private enterprises, academia and research institutions. The policy also encourages joint ventures and collaborative projects with international partners to undertake space missions, research initiatives, and capacity building programs.
vii) A significant aspect of the policy is its focus on space education and awareness. Public outreach programs, educational campaigns, and engagement with stakeholders aims to enhance public understanding of space technology and its benefits, fostering a culture of innovation and scientific curiosity in Pakistan.
viii) A key highlight of the policy is its focus on capacity building and skill development in space technology and applications. This includes training programs. Workshops, and educational initiatives aimed at nurturing a skilled workforce and fostering innovation in the space sector.
ix) The policy recognizes the importance of cooperation in space activities, particularly with countries and regional space organizations.
