Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology at 69th IAEA General Conference
Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Mr. Ali Raza Anwar, delivered Pakistan’s National Statement at the 69th Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna. In his remarks, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the peaceful uses of nuclear technology for sustainable development and global cooperation.
Highlighting Pakistan’s contribution to addressing climate change, the Chairman noted that the country’s six operational nuclear power plants currently provide 18.3% of the national energy mix while preventing nearly 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. He emphasized that fair and equitable access to civil nuclear technologies is essential for enhancing climate resilience and achieving sustainable socio‑economic growth.
The Chairman, also underlined the wide application of nuclear technologies for public welfare in Pakistan. He informed delegates that the country’s nuclear medicine network includes 20 cancer hospitals serving approximately 80% of patients nationwide. Similarly, PAEC’s research initiatives have resulted in the development of more than 150 improved crop varieties and the use of isotope hydrology techniques to strengthen national water security. He further announced the launch of new scholarships for Pakistani students under the IAEA’s Marie Curie Programme through the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS).
In reaffirming Pakistan’s strong safety and security record, the PAEC Chairman observed that Pakistan’s 108 reactor‑years of operational experience demonstrate the country’s capabilities and firm commitment to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and safeguards. He underscored the role of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) as an independent and effective regulator.
He also recalled Pakistan’s history of close cooperation with the IAEA, including hosting Agency emergency preparedness exercises. Looking ahead, he announced that Pakistan will host both the IAEA International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) Mission and the Nuclear Security Support Centre (NSSC) meeting in 2026.
Through these initiatives, Pakistan reiterated at the IAEA General Conference its determination to advance the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology for the benefit of its people and the wider international community.
