Dr. Marghoob Saleem Butt
Ambassador Dr. Marghoob Saleem Butt is a career diplomat who joined Pakistan Foreign Service in 1995. He holds a PhD in Juridical Sciences from the Peoples Friendship University (Moscow), a Masters degree in Political Science from the University of Punjab (Pakistan) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Diplomatic Studies from Oxford University (UK).
In his 30 years of diplomatic career, Amb. Marghoob Butt has served on various important assignments both at Headquarters and Pakistan Missions abroad. At Headquarters (Islamabad), he worked as Desk Officer for European Union (1995-2000), Deputy Director for Iran and Turkey (2003-2005), Director for Minister of State Office and Multilateral Affairs (2006-2007, 2018-2022).
His last assignment at Headquarters was Additional Secretary/ National Coordinator of Pakistan for Shanghai Cooperation Organization (2022-2025).
Amb. Dr. Marghoob Butt’s diplomatic assignments in Pakistan’s Missions abroad include Third Secretary in Spain (1998); Second Secretary in Mexico (2000-2003), First Secretary in UN Mission in Geneva (2007-2010) and Counsellor in UN Mission in New York (2010-2013).
He also has the distinction of serving as the founding Executive Director of Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission in Jeddah(2013-2018).
Dr. Marghoob Butt joined his current assignment as the Ambassador of Pakistan to Switzerland in April 2025.
He fluently speaks Urdu, Punjabi, English and Spanish languages.
