A career diplomat, Mr. Ilyas Mehmood Nizami took over responsibilities as Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Romania on November 2, 2025. He is concurrently accredited as non-resident Ambassador of Pakistan to the Republic of Moldova. Earlier, he remained Director General (South Asia & SAARC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad for about three years.
Mr. Nizami previously served as Deputy Permanent Representative (DPR) of Pakistan to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah (2019-2022) and Counsellor (Political) at the High Commission for Pakistan in New Delhi (2015-2019). He also worked as Second Secretary at the Embassy of Pakistan, Paris (2008-2011).
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, Mr. Nizami served as Director (Personnel-I) (2014-2015), Director (Mission Services) (2014), Deputy Chief of Protocol (Accreditation & Facilitation) (2013), Director (SSA) (2012), Assistant Director (India-I) (2007-2008) and Assistant Director (SSA) (2006).
Prior to joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 2005, he served as an officer of the Provincial Civil Service of the Government of Punjab from 2001 to 2004.
Mr. Nizami holds a Masters degree in Economics from the University of the Punjab, Lahore, and a Masters in International Service degree from the School of International Service, American University, Washington DC. He speaks Urdu, Punjabi, English and French languages.
Mr. Nizami is married, and blessed with two sons and a daughter.
