Pakistan enjoys brotherly relations with all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries, which are embedded in history and religion. The GCC region has remained one of the most important pillars of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Pakistan has abiding interest in go-politics, geo-strategic and geo-economic developments happening in this region. Pakistan also enjoys well-established trade, defence and people-to-people ties with the regional countries.
Bahrain is one of the important counties in the GCC region. Pakistan established its diplomatic ties with Bahrain on 14 October 1971, right after independence of Bahrain. Pakistan Embassy was one of the the first embassies opened in Bahrain. The two countries enjoy cordial relationship which is characterized by frequent interactions at all levels. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain visited Pakistan in March 2014. His Royal Highness Crown Prince and the Deputy Supreme Commander Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa paid an official visit to Pakistan in December 2006. Similarly, leadership from Pakistan have visited Bahrain on various occasions. The leadership of the two sides also remain in contact by telephone.
Pakistan and Bahrain have established Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) at the level of the Foreign Ministers to discuss all-encompassing trade and economic ties, take agreed decisions and supervise implementation of these decisions. So far, two sessions of JMC have been held, the last being held in Bahrain in July 2021.
Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, participated in the 48th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) in March 2022 and 17th Extraordinary Session of OIC CFM in December 2021 in Islamabad.
Pakistan and Bahrain enjoy parliamentary cooperation between Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament on both sides. The Parliaments on both sides have established Pakistan-Bahrain Parliamentary Friendship Groups. Former Chairman Senate Mr. Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, accompanied by an 8-member Parliamentary Delegation visited Bahrain in February 2020. Ms. Fawzia bint Yusuf Zainal, former Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Bahrain visited Pakistan along with a parliamentary delegation in November 2021. Pakistan’s parliamentary delegation comprising members of Senate and National Assembly participated in the 146th session of International Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in March 2023 in Bahrain.
The trade volume between the two countries in recent years has ranged between USD 500 million to around USD 1 billion. Major exports from Pakistan to Bahrain include meat, vegetables, rice, tobacco and textile. Imports from Bahrain are petroleum and its products, ferrous wastes and scrape and aluminium. In service sector, transport, government goods and financial sector led the bilateral trade ties.
The defence ties between these two nations are historical and strong. High-level visits by armed forces leadership from Pakistan is a key characteristic of these relations. From Bahraini side, General Shaikh Mohammed Bin Isa Al Khalifa, Commander of Bahrain National Guard visits Pakistan frequently.
Bahrain has been one of the favourite destinations for the Pakistani workforce since the early seventies. Bahrain generously hosts a large number of Pakistanis who act as a bridge between the two brotherly countries. The Pakistani community in Bahrain includes doctors, engineers, bankers, businessmen as well as workers.
