Following the landmark signing of MoU for Migration & Labour Mobility between Pakistan and Italy in Islamabad on May 7, 2025, the two friendly nations have convened the inaugural session of its Joint Working Group (JWG) at Italian Foreign Ministry earlier today.
The JWG was Co-Chaired by Federal Secretary OPHRD Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry and Director General for Migration Policies Luigi Maria Vignali who were assisted by their respective teams from Ministries of Labor and Interior. Embassies in both capitals also participated in the proceedings in addition to CWA and Link Officer Immigration from Consulate General of Pakistan in Milan.
Lasting 3 hours, the excellent interaction took note of the positive trajectory of strategic bilateral cooperation, high level exchanges and full spectrum of mechanisms. While welcoming the presence of a vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Italy, both also appreciated their contributions for Italian development and for serving as a bridge of friendship between the two nations.
The Italian side reaffirmed the importance of the MoU as a cornerstone for deepening bilateral cooperation in the field of human resource development and export of Pakistani workforce to Italy. The discussions focused on identifying quotas, enhancing regular migration through technical trainings, mutual skill development and recognition as means to promoting bilateral cooperation under the accord.
Pakistani diaspora in Italy ranks No.1 in Europe (save UK) both in size & remittances recorded at an unprecedented $1.121Bn in 2024. The bilateral accord for Migration & Labor Mobility with Italy is the first Pakistan has signed with a European nation, signifying strong bonds of bilateral trust and mutual reliance as well as potential opportunities for Pakistani workforce across other destinations in Europe.
The JWG was concluded by concurring notify sub-committees ahead of
reconvening its 2nd Session in Islamabad in January 2026.
