Pakistan & Italy have signed a landmark ‘MoU for Migration & Labour Mobility' at Islamabad on May 7, 2025 at the prestigious signing ceremony hosted by Hon’ble President of Pakistan.
Minister for Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development (OP&HRD) Chaudhry Salik Hussain and Italian Minister for Interior Matteo Piantedosi signed the Labor accord.
Mr. Piantedosi paid courtesy calls on hon’ble President and Deputy Prime Minister. Welcoming the MoU as another milestone in their ‘strategic ties’ both sides welcomed soaring trajectory of diplomatic, political, security & trade ties.
A ‘Declaration for Joint Committee for Cooperation & Combating Transnational Organized Crime’ was also signed between Mr. Piantedosi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Pakistani Ministers for Interior and OPHRD had undertaken a joint bilateral visit to Rome in June 2024 when they met Mr. Piantedosi while the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to conclude MoU for Labor when Secretary General, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted his Pakistani counterpart for ‘Bilateral Political Consultation’ at Rome on Feb 28, 2024.
The above mechanisms hold twofold significance for promoting well-established credentials of Pakistani workforce in Europe and reaffirming Pak-Italy joint will towards countering organized crime.
Italy & Pakistan signed ‘Dual Citizenship Agreement’ since early 80s. Today, the near 300,000 Pakistanis in Italy are ranked 1st across Europe (save UK) in size and remittances recorded at an unprecedented $1.121Bn in 2024 (6th globally). Pakistani exports to Italy also registered an unprecedented $1.13Bn with total trade of around $1.5Bn, yielding surplus of $800mn for Pakistan in 2024.
