Mr. Ján Kubiš, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Afghanistan called on Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar today. Foreign Minister Khar welcomed Mr. Kubiš on his first visit to Pakistan as Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan. Mr. Kubiš took up his current position in Kabul on 17 January 2012. The UNSG Special Representative discussed the Afghan situation and the role of UNAMA in Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Khar said that the fate of the two countries was intrinsically interlinked. She reiterated Pakistan’s support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process and emphasized that it was critical for achieving an intra-Afghan political settlement with a view to ensuring long term peace, stability and progress in the country. She hoped that about 3 million Afghan refugees being hosted by Pakistan will be able to return to Afghanistan with dignity and honour. Foreign Minister Khar also stressed that the international community should focus on building Afghan institutions which was crucial for the sustainability of development in that country.
