Diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Poland were established on 17th December 1962 and Pakistan opened its Embassy in Warsaw in 1969. The bilateral relations have made strong progress particularly in the last 20 years and now cover multiple areas including political, economic, defence and education. After the introduction of e-visa facility by Pakistan, the number of tourists from Poland to Pakistan has significantly increased. Today our bilateral relations are marked by cordiality and friendship.

2. Poland is an important country for Pakistan both bilaterally as well as in the context of the EU. The year 2022 marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Political Contacts/Bilateral Visits

3. The mechanism of Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) between the two foreign ministriesplays an important role in reviewing progress on bilateral issues and exchanging views on regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. The latest (8th) round of BPC was held on 05 June 2023 in Islamabad.
4. There had been two high level visits in the history of bilateral relations: Polish President Marian Spychalski’s visit to Pakistan in December 1970 and President Musharraf’s visit to Warsaw in April 2007. The Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski paid an official visit to Pakistan in August 2011, on behalf of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton. The Chairman Senate of Pakistan visited Warsaw in 2011 and 2013. The Marshal of the Polish Senate visited Pakistan in 2012 and 2018.
5. A delegation from the Senate and National Assembly of Pakistan visited Poland to attend the Internet Governance Forum (IGF-2021) held in Katowice from 6-10 December 2021. At senior official levels, Under Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Mr. Wojciech Gerwel visited Islamabad on 05-06 June 2023 to hold the 8^th round of Bilateral Political Consultations while Political Director at the Polish Foreign Office Mr. Witold Sobkow visited Islamabad on 5-6 December 2022 to discuss bilateral and regional issues.
6. Previously, at the invitation of the Polish Government, the former Federal Minister for Defence Mr. Khurram Dastgir paid an official visit to Warsaw from 17-19 April 2018. The key highlight of the visit was the signing of the Bilateral Defence Cooperation Agreement.

Agreements/MoUs

7. There is a considerable legal base between the two countries as several Agreements/MoUs have already been signed including Agreement on Air Services (1970); Convention for Avoidance of Double Taxation of Income (1974); MoU on Consultations between the two foreign ministries (2004); MoU on Cooperation in Energy and Mineral Resources (2014); MoU on Cooperation between State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Polish Financial Supervision Authority (2018); Agreement on Defence Cooperation (2018); and Agreement of Visa Abolition for the holders of diplomatic passports (2023).
8. The two sides continue to engage to further expand the legal base and institutional framework of our bilateral cooperation.

Trade, Economic and Investment Cooperation

9. There is a steady increase in bilateral trade According to the statistics provided by the Polish side the volume of bilateral trade between Pakistan and Poland in 2023 was US$ 922.0 million. Pakistan’s exports to Poland amounted to US$ 794.0 million and imports from Poland were worth US$ 128.0 million. Trade figures for last five calendar years are given below:

10. In the field of energy cooperation, the state-owned Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) has been conducting petroleum exploration and production activities in Pakistan since 1997. The Polish company besides successfully drilling several gas fields has also constructed a 50 km gas transportation pipeline.
11. Pakistan’s Ministry of Petroleum and Poland’s Ministry of Economy also signed an MoU on Cooperation on Energy and Mineral Resources in March 2014.

Education & Cultural Cooperation

12. Poland is increasingly becoming an attractive destination for Pakistani students. MoUs between several educational institutions of Pakistan and Poland Universities have been signed in 2015 and 2016 on cooperation in various fields (medical, agriculture, and social sciences).

Pakistani Community

There are over 1400 Pakistanis living in Poland. Around 350 of them are students, a few professionals working in multinational companies and banks, and some are running small businesses of their own.
