Public Diplomacy

Pakistan has invested heavily in assisting he people of with Afghanistan in various ways. From its limited resources, Pakistan has provided assistance of nearly US $1 billion for capacity building in various sectors including education, health as well as building schools, hospitals, roads etc. Communications infrastructures of Afghanistan. Almost all the projects under Pakistan’s Bilateral Assistance Program have been completed.

Education & Training

• Rahman Baba School, Kabul. It was the first project in the field of education completed by Pakistan in Afghanistan. It was handed over to the Government of Afghanistan in April 2008. The construction cost, without overheads, was US $4 million.
• Rahman Baba Hostel, Kabul. Pakistan is constructing a huge hostel for Rahman Baba School which could accommodate up to 1500 students. The hostel being built at a cost of 15.86 million.
• Allama Iqbal Faculty of Humanities, Kabul University. The foundation stone of Humanities Block at Kabul University was laid on 11Otober 2005 while its construction was completed in summer 2009. The construction cost of this three story building is US $10 million. This new faculty building is also furnished by the Government of Pakistan.
• Sir Syed Post Graduate Faculty of Sciences at Nangarhar University, Jalalabad. Pakistan has completed the construction of this three story building at a cost of about US $5 million.
• Liaqat Ali Khan Engineering Faculty, Balkh University, Mazar-e-Sharif. This four story building in the new campus of Balkh University is completed at US $10 million while its construction was started in October 2006.
• Vocational Training Institute, Kart-e-Parwan, Kabul.
• 2×200 KVA Generator for Kabul University.
• 10 Buses for Kabul and Nangarhar Universities
• 5 million Religious Text Books of Grade One to Grade Ten
• 300,000 School Kits for 18 provinces
• 3000 School Bags for Kabul, Jalalabad and Kandahar
• 500,000 Refugee Students enrolled in Schools in Pakistan
• More than 9000 Fully Funded Scholarships for Higher Education under Allama Iqbal Scholarship Program in Pakistan since 2006
• Trained 644 Afghan Police and Drug Control Officers, Doctors and Paramedical Staff, Diplomats, Judicial Officers, Customs Officers, Agriculturists and Bankers

Healthcare

• Nishtar Kidney Centre, Jalalabad. The construction of this state of the art Kidney Centre started by Pakistan in January 2006 and was completed in summer 2010 at a cost of US $7 million.
• Four Hundred Bed Jinnah Hospital, Kabul. The foundation stone of this Hospital was laid on 10 October 2007 and its completion cost is US $20 million.
• Naeb Aminullah Khan Hospital, Logar. The construction work on this three story Hospital was started in November 2008 and it completion cost is about US $20 million.
• 45 Ambulances for 12 Provinces
• 14 Fully Equipped Mobile Medical Units
• Medicines for Kabul, Jalalabad and Kandahar
• A Week Long Free Eye Camp in Jalalabad treated 4818 patients, performed 357 Eye Surgeries and Distributed 4126 Eye Glasses
• Pakistan has conducted several eye surgeries across Pakistan. In one instance, for example, a single philanthropic Pakistani organization performed over 30,000 free eye surgeries on Afghan patients in 2008 alone

Roads & Transport

• 75 km Torkham-Jalalabad Road. It was the first major project completed by Pakistan at cost of US $34.42 million. The road was inaugurated in September 2006. There are five bridges and 184 culverts on the road.
• Additional Carriage Way at Torkham-Jalalabad Road. Pakistan started the construction of Torkham-Jalalabad Additional Carriage way in January 2007 at the request of Government of Afghanistan. This project also with 5 bridges and 184 culverts costed US $72.35.
• 2 Internal Roads in Jalalabad. Construction of 2 internal roads in Jalalabad, of 3.25 km and 2.5 km length respectively, were completed by Pakistan at the cost of US $4 million.
• Provision of Road Construction Machinery. Pakistan has also donated various road construction machinery to different provinces. The cost of the project was over US $1 million.
• 30 Mobile Hot Mixers, costing US $1.5 million, were handed over to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works in April 2010
• 200 Trucks
• 100 Public Transport Buses
• 2 Pickups, 4 Generators and Medicines for Wardak Province
• Pakistan has donated over US $3 million of equipment for the development and maintenance of telecommunication and electricity systems to various provinces. The equipment included such items as transformers, rolls of electric wire and electric polls.

General Assistance

• 50,000 Metric Ton Wheat program. The program worth US $8.12 million.
• 9600 Tents for the Internally Displaced People during various calamities.
• More than 300 Afghan Nationals in Pakistan Assisted annually to Perform Hajj
