The diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Maldives were established on
26 July 1966. Both the countries have been enjoying cordial relations, which are characterized by cordiality, common faith, commonality of interests, mutual respect and trust. The cooperation between the two countries has expanded considerably over the years and covers a wide range of issues including education, health, sports, capacity building, defense, trade, social sector, climate change and other.
The building of the People’s Majlis (Parliament), gifted by Pakistan, is a living monument of friendship between the two countries. Both the countries enjoy close cooperation. During Tsunami in 2004, Pakistan Navy Ships rescued 367 tourists from the remote islands besides extended humanitarian assistance to the Maldives. As a recognition of Pakistan Navy’s contributions, the Mission Commander of PN Ships, was given the highest award by the Honorable President of the Maldives.
The first ever Medical College (School of Medicine) in the Maldives was gifted by the brotherly people of Pakistan to the brotherly people of Maldives. During 2024, the first batch of medical students completed their MBBS. Under Capacity building; Pakistan has been extending number of training opportunities in various disciplines to the Maldives.
Pakistan’s Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has also been extending its valuable services in the Maldives since 1976.
The two countries mostly share similar perspectives on world affairs and often take coordinated positions on issues of mutual concern and interest at various international fora including the United Nations, OIC, SAARC and other similar forums.
