Deputy Prime Minister/ Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar participated in the meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York under the theme: “Reforming and Improving Global Governance: Working Together to Address Global Challenges.”
The meeting, organized by the People’s Republic of China, was chaired by Mr. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China; and joined by UN Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed; and other senior representatives of UN Member States.
In his statement, the Deputy Prime Minister/ Foreign Minister commended China’s visionary leadership and its steadfast commitment to strengthening multilateralism and revitalizing international cooperation at a time of profound global uncertainty.
Highlighting the multiple and interconnected challenges confronting the international community, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the urgent need for renewed solidarity and a more effective system of global governance anchored in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled commitment to multilateralism and emphasized that Pakistan and China stood united in support of a just and inclusive global governance architecture rooted in international law, with the United Nations at its core.
The Deputy Prime Minister / Foreign Minister appreciated China’s role as a stabilizing force in international affairs and expressed Pakistan’s strong support for President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative, as well as China’s other major global initiatives — namely the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative — which together offer a comprehensive vision for promoting sustainable development, collective security, inter-civilizational harmony, and equitable governance. He noted that these initiatives reinforced the centrality of the United Nations while advocating greater representation and a stronger voice for the Global South in global decision-making processes.
He also emphasized the importance of the consistent application of international law, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, the peaceful settlement of disputes, faithful implementation of international treaties, and realization of the right to self-determination for peoples living under foreign occupation, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the UN Security Council must become more democratic, representative, and accountable, with small and medium-sized states fully and adequately represented on the Council. He noted that the addition of new permanent members would violate the fundamental principle of sovereign equality and make the Council even less representative.
The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continue working closely with China and the international community to advance equitable development, strengthen multilateral cooperation, uphold international law, and promote lasting peace and stability around the world.
