Mr. Ishtiak Ahmed Akil assumed charge as the Consul General of Pakistan in Montreal, Canada in December 2020. He last served as Joint Secretary at the National Security Division, Prime Minister's Office, Islamabad, from October 2019 to December 2020. Prior to that, he served as the Director for Russia and Eastern Europe at the Ministry's Headquarters from July 2011 to April 2013. He also held roles as Desk Officer for Western Europe and the EU from July 2001 to August 2002 and Desk Officer for India from August 2002 to February 2004.
Mr. Akil’s diplomatic assignments abroad include serving at the Embassy of Pakistan in Vienna, Austria from March 2004 to July 2011 both as Third/Second/First Secretary and the Alternate Representatives of Pakistan to Vienna-based International Organizations. From May 2013 to August 2016, he was the Counsellor/Deputy Head of Mission as well as the Alternate Representatives of Pakistan to the IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) at the Embassy of Pakistan in Rome, Italy. In Vienna and Rome, he participated in numerous international conferences and meetings. He also served as Minister/Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Pakistan in Beirut from August 2016 to September 2019.
In his current role, he also serves as the Alternate Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Mr. Akil holds a Master’s degree in Pakistan Studies. He is fluent in Punjabi, Urdu, English and Arabic. He is married and has two sons and one daughter.
